Acne - Causes and Solutions

Acne is an inflammatory, chronic skin condition, acne causes blackheads, nodules, whiteheads, cysts, and pimples on different parts of your skin. While the disease is not dangerous, it can leave scars on the skin. There are pores in human skin that are linked to the oil glands underneath through follicles, which are sacs that make and secrete a liquid. 

The glands also produce sebum, an oily liquid that carries cells of the dead skin to the surface of your skin, through follicles. A small hair grows out of your skin through the follicle. When these follicles are blocked, the oil collects under the skin, resulting in pimples which can grow on shoulders, neck, back, face, and chest. Hair, sebum, and skin cells tend to bundle up into a plug that can be affected by bacteria, resulting in swelling. When this plug starts to break down, a pimple develops in that area. The bacteria contributing to the infection or pimples are called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). According to research, the frequency and severity of this skin disease depend on the strain of bacteria. All types of acne bacteria do not cause pimples. A particular strain also assists in keeping the skin free of pimples.

Causes of Acne:

There are a number of things that cause acne, but the major one increases in androgen levels, which happens when adolescence begins. Some other causes of acne include:

• Hormonal changes
• Greasy cosmetics
• Menstruation
• Medications containing androgen and lithium 
• Stress

Solutions of Acne:

Although the different types of acne make it essential for you to consult a 

dermatologist, here are some medications that doctors usually recommend. 

• Salicylic acid to prevent clogging of pores.
• Resorcinol to treat blackheads and whiteheads.
• Sulfur to remove dead skin cells.
• Benzoyl peroxide to remove excess oil and kill bacteria. 
• Isotretinoin to decrease the production of oil.
• Antibiotics to kill bacteria.

Other than medications, acne can also be treated by some home remedies such as:

• Applying some apple cider vinegar
• Using a honey and cinnamon mask
• Using tea tree oil
