My Night Skin Care Tips

The best time of the day to cleanse your face, leave products or let your face breathe is at night.

Here I am going to list some tips I recommend for anyone looking for daily night skin care tips:

CleanseThis is a given, but sometimes it is easy to simply fall into bed without taking the time to clear away the dirt and grime of the day. For those with oily skin, use a cleanser with salicylic or glycolic acid.

Remove all makeup: You have to remove all makeup before going to sleep at night because leaving the makeup can cause you acne and/or irritation.

Apply a soothing face mask: To help your skincare products sink in more efficiently.

Exfoliate: You should exfoliate only two or three times a week; more often can dry your skin.

Use a toner: Use a toner that is specifically made for your skin type. For example, those with dry or normal skin shouldn’t use toners that contain alcohol or it can irritate or dry your skin.

Moisturize: Moisturizing your face should always come after a cleansing. When you wash your face, you wash away essential oils and moisturizing your skin helps replenish it. If you have oily skin, make sure you are using a moisturizer that is water based and meant for your skin type. Take an extra couple minutes and use a deep moisturizer on the extra dry areas of your body, such as elbows, knees, heels and hands and feet.

A good nights sleep: A good nights sleep will literally help your face refresh your face.

Do Women of Color Need Special Skincare Products?

It surprises many people when they learn that darker skin tones do not require special skincare products. It seems contrary to what you would expect, but the fact is skin color is not a skin type!
None of the research indicates that skin color has anything to do with the skincare products you need. It's not that darker skin tones don't have some physiological differences from lighter skin tones; it’s just that those differences don't impact what products you should be using.

Skincare is Color Blind

When it comes to skincare needs, skin is skin—no matter the color. Think of it like your diet: Regardless of our ethnic background, we all need the same nutritious foods that supply antioxidants, vitamins, and omega fatty acids to be healthy. The exact same concept applies to skin.
Skin is the body’s largest organ, which is why everyone’s skin needs the same helpful ingredients to address issues like dry skin, clogged pores, signs of aging, sun damage from unprotected sun exposure, uneven skin tone, oily skin, sensitive skin, and so on. All of those problems affect every ethnicity in the same way with only minor variations, but those variations don’t affect how you take care of your skin.

It is also important for everyone, regardless of skin color, to avoid problematic, skin-aggravating ingredients such as SD and denatured alcohol, menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus, lemon, lime, and natural or synthetic fragrances as well as scrubs and stiff-bristled cleansing brushes. Exposure to these skin-provoking ingredients will exacerbate any skin problem you have or create skin problems you don’t want. Bad products and unhelpful ingredients don’t care what color your skin is!

What You Need to Know

  • Always use a gentle, water soluble cleanser (avoid bar soaps; they are too drying, can clog pores and cause skin to look ashy and feel dry).

  • Always choose products that are appropriate for your skin type (i.e. gels and serums for oily or combination skin; creams and lotions for dry skin).
  • Always use a well-formulated sunscreen during the day (the most typical cause of uneven skin tone for women of color and the appearance of signs of aging is sun damage).
  • Always use products loaded with state-of-the-art ingredients including antioxidants, skin-replenishing ingredients, and skin-restoring ingredients.

These are the universal basic needs for all skin types regardless of ethnic background or skin color. This is the essential diet everyone’s skin needs, just like everyone’s basic diet for a healthy body has the same food group needs.

Dark Skin and Sun Damage

Having darker skin color does have an advantage over lighter skin tones because darker skin color does offer some amount of protection from sun damage. Essentially, the darker your skin tone, the more natural defense your skin has against the sun.

Applying a broad spectrum sunscreen 365 days a year, rain or shine, is as basic as it gets to having beautiful, healthy skin. Even if you’re inside all day, the silent but skin-damaging UVA rays of daylight come through windows. Sun damage isn’t pretty for anyone. Uneven skin tone, early signs of aging, rough skin surface, dry skin, mottled skin, and loss of firmness will occur for everyone if skin isn’t consistently protected.

Having the best skin of your life truly starts with sunscreen. Believing darker skin will somehow protect your skin from visible damage is dangerous thinking. No matter what skin color you have, it can absolutely be damaged by the sun. We repeat: Everyone needs to apply and reapply broad-spectrum sunscreen every day of year.

Tips for dry and/or oily skin

Having dry or oily skin can affect a lot in your life in multiple ways
A proper skincare routine is extremely important for healthy - young looking skin.

I normally advise my clients that, having dry skin could not only mean you could have a skin problem, but it could cause break outs, ugly looking skin and could make your makeup look patchy. As for oily skin, too much oil can cause acne also and make your face look greasy.

Why is your skin dry? Dry skin that naturally produces little or no oil and is what causes the skin to be dry and flaky.

Why is your skin oily? Skin that produces oil will have large pores and the skin is shiny or greasy.

For dry skin:

1. Here is how to prevent bath/ showers to affect your skin even more:

  • Limit your time in the shower or bath to 5 or 10 minutes
  • Use warm rather than hot water
  • Wash with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser
  • Apply enough cleanser to remove dirt and oil
  • Pat your skin gently dry with a towel
  • Put on the moisturizer immediately after drying your skin

2. Apply moisturizer immediately after washing. Ointments, creams, and lotions work by trapping existing moisture in your skin.
3. Use an ointment or cream rather than a lotion. Ointments and creams are more effective and less irritating than lotions. (olive oil or jojoba oil work best).
4. Lip balm. Choose a lip balm that feels good on your lips. Some healing lip balms can irritate your lips, if when you apply your lip balm it stings than you need a better option.
5. Use only gentle, unscented skin care products. Some skin care products are too harsh for dry, sensitive skin.

When your skin is dry, stop using:

  • Deodorant soaps
  • Skin care products with alcohol, fragrance, retinoids, or alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA)
  • Avoiding these products will help your skin retain its natural oils.

6. Wear hand sanitizer or gloves a lot. Our hands are usually dry from the things we do all day.
7. Choose non-irritating clothes and laundry detergent. When our skin is dry clothes and laundry detergent can be irritating.
8. Add moisture to the air. Plug in a humidifier. If you can check your home heating system, find out if you have a humidifier on the system — and whether it’s working.

For Oily Skin

  1. Wash your face twice a day, once in the morning and before bed. Don't wash a lot because over-washing can strip your skin of  all the natural moisturizers and increase oil production.
  2. Use a cleanser. If you need something stronger, look for ingredients made for oily skin.
  3. Don’t scrub your face because it can stimulate oil production.
  4. If you have oil build up in between facial washings, use a medicated pad or blotting paper to remove excess oil.
  5. Oily skin still needs to be moisturized, so look for water based or oil-free moisturizers and stay away from creams and heavy moisturizers.
  6. When choosing foundation and other make-up, pick those with gel, liquid or powder bases. If using a liquid make-up make sure it is water based, not oil based. Makeup labeled “noncomedongenic” contain ingredients that won’t clog your pores.
  7. Exfoliate once a week to help loosen and remove dirt and oil in your pores.
  8. Don’t pick, pop or squeeze pimples because it will cause scarring and leave red spots on your face.

Learn how to conceal wrinkles

Learn how to conceal wrinkles
Sometimes you need a quick fix for a problem that has already occurred. In that case, you will need to take extra care of your skin.
  • Hydrate your skin:   As you get older, your skin becomes a bit dry. When the skin gets dry, wrinkles and fine lines get easy access, and the only solution is to moisturize the skin. Moisturizers help to lock the moisture and keep the skin hydrated for longer periods of time. Eventually, they help conceal your wrinkles, so they aren’t visible.
  • Make-up: This method is the easiest way to hide your fine lines and wrinkles. This quick and easy fix is only temporary, however, and it should be used in conjunction with the other sites that help solve the problem rather than conceal it.
  • Avoid excessive washing: Dermatologist believes that excessive washing can make your skin dry. When cleaned, the skin loses its natural oil and moisture that prevent wrinkles. To avoid this try washing your face only twice a day, and do so gently. Use a soft towel and gently pat your face dry.
  • Medical treatment: There are several medications and techniques that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and make those fine lines less visible. Like anti-age facials,  Contact me if you feel that your skin needs professional care. I can help you choose the best products and procedures to get the best results. Call me at 305-541-1630
  • Anti-aging products – There are a lot of products today that minimize existing wrinkles and slow down an appearance of new ones. Some products stop skin aging and minimizes wrinkles to restore youthful skin appearance. Make sure to look for ingredients that make your skin smooth, firm, and hydrated.  Liz Skincare also offers treatments that improve collagen production and restores elasticity of your skin. Products are applied to clean face, neck and cleavage. Always invest time for your skin care routine.
