Here are 12 Skincare Resolutions you Should Make for 2019.

It’s a new year, which means the majority of us are making New Year’s resolutions and setting goals to improve ourselves. Many lists include hitting the gym more and eating lots of leafy greens, but there’s more to New Year’s resolutions than being healthier. Now is also the time to make some beauty resolutions.
it’s always good to take a look at your routine and see if there are any areas that need improvement. Chances are, there are a few.

Take off your Makeup Every Night.

Removing your makeup basically requires as much effort as putting on your pajamas, but it’s much more important. No matter how tired you are, resolve to properly cleanse your face before you go to sleep every single night (no cheating!). If using a cleanser and water takes too much effort, opt for a time-saving cleansing wipe instead. Your skin will thank you.

Make Wearing Sunscreen a Daily Habit.

If you’re going to have only one beauty resolution this year, it should be to wear sunscreen every day. Regularly wearing sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays and the premature signs of aging. Commit to applying sunscreen 365 days a year, including the winter months. Not wearing sunscreen because you don’t like the formula isn’t an excuse: these top-rated sunscreens aren’t greasy or chalky.

Don't Forget About the Rest of your Body.

We’re often so focused on our faces that we tend to neglect the skin on our bodies. You may think that soaping up with your body wash and loofah is sufficient, but that probably isn’t enough. Try to show your body the same love as your face by using body scrubs regularly and remember to moisturize.

Get to Really Know your Skin and it's Needs.

After living in your skin for so many years, you may think that you know it inside and out, but do you really? Do you know what your undertone is? Do you know whether your skin is oily, dry or a combination of the two? You may think that you do, but it’s worth consulting an expert, like a makeup artist or dermatologist, to figure out things for sure. That way you’ll be able to choose products that are better suited to your needs.

Moisturizing, Make it a Priority!

Moisturizer is as important to your skin care regimen as your cleanser. It doesn’t matter whether you have sensitive, dry or oily skin, you need to apply moisturizer regularly. You even need it in the summer months. If you don’t like using moisturizer because you find it greasy, there are lots of lightweight formulas that won’t clog your pores to choose from.

Exfoliate Daily!

As great as your moisturizer is, it cannot do all of the work. You need something that will remove those dead skin cells that build up. That’s where exfoliating comes in. You can choose whatever tools or products you like, the important thing is that you make exfoliation a regular part of your routine as opposed to something you do every couple months when you remember.

Do NOT Pick your Face!

This is one of the harder ones to quit, but doing it will majorly benefit your complexion. No matter how tempting it is, make it your goal to stop picking your face. That includes squeezing pimples, removing blackheads and scratching scabs. Remind yourself that messing with your face just creates additional problems, including more breakouts and even scarring.

Store your Properly.

Finding a good spot to store your beauty products is about more than organization or decorating. It’s also about maintaining the products themselves. FYI: Storing your products in an Instagram-worthy spot often isn’t the optimal place for them. Many cosmetics can deteriorate if they’re exposed to light, humidity or extreme temperatures, so choose a location that will help preserve them and keep you organized.

Get Rid of Expired Products.

Toss out any expired beauty products. If you don’t remember when you bought it, toss it. Same goes if it has a funky smell or has changed color. It doesn’t matter how expensive it was, throw it in the trash.

Don't Switch Products Constantly.

Results are never instantaneous. You might need to wait six weeks or more to notice any changes in your skin, so resolve to give new products time to work before moving on. The only exception is if you try something and it gives you an allergic or cosmetic reaction.

Get enough Sleep!

You may already have this resolution on your list, but it’s important from a beauty perspective too. Getting a full night of sleep doesn’t just prevent raccoon eyes, it is also the time when your skin regenerates. If you want to further improve your skin while you catch some zzz's, you can try an overnight beauty product.

Here is why you should get facials every month.

A good daily skin care routine is essential for maintaining a healthy looking, fresh skin, but every once in a while we need to leave it to the professionals and get a facial treatment at a beauty salon or a spa. More precisely, you should get one once a month or every 6 weeks. By making it a habit of scheduling a regular appointment in spa centers.

A facial is a multi-step, multi-purpose skin treatment including steam, face masks, exfoliation, cleansing, a face massage and a variety of creams and lotions. There are many types of facial treatments, and choosing the one you need depends on your skin type and skin issues. Some are highly moisturizing, others are firming and restoring, while some focus on problem areas and certain skin conditions.

No matter the type, all facials have some amazing benefits for your skin:

Deep Cleansing:

  •  A better, deeper cleanse than the one you do at home – a cleansing facial will help your skin get rid of oil buildup, toxins and dirt from your everyday environment, thoroughly removing all the bacteria that could cause skin issues. A good exfoliation like microdermabrasion will remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin and unclog your pores, allowing the absorption of other products. This will also make your skin look and feel softer and smoother, making your makeup blend easier and look better.

Extraction, if needed, is great for removing blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and preventing breakouts. This is a must – do step for everyone struggling with acne because it clears out the skin and gives it a purifying effect.

Anti-Aging Facial treatments:

  •  Can help slow down the aging process and prevent the appearance of wrinkles. Massaging your face with an anti-aging cream will immediately increase the blood circulation and oxygen flow, which promotes collagen production and enhances the elasticity of your skin. This leads to a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles and preventing their appearance. Remember: It’s never too early to take good care of your skin!

Relaxing Massages:

  •  Are so good for relaxing, relieving stress and balancing your mind. Just like your body, your face muscles need a massage and most facial treatments include one. The boost in circulation you’ll get will stimulate the lymphatic vessels and detoxify your skin, making it look healthy and youthful. The nice smell of face masks is only another incredible addition to a soothing, relaxing experience.

Skin Rejuvenation:

  • The exfoliation, extraction, massage, steam and mask application during a facial treatment lead to skin rejuvenation, or in other words – a fresh, renewed skin. This improves the appearance of the skin, giving it a healthy, radiant glow and balanced complexion. You might not see the results instantly, but on the long run, your skin is going to get restored! So keep in mind that being regular and consistent with your facials is a key.

Improved Skin Care Routine:

  •  A good aesthetician will analyze your skin condition and help you choose the best facial treatment for your skin type. You can pick up some good advice by a professional, talk about your daily skin care routine and get recommendations on which products would work best for your skin. This is important because you can use these tips to prevent further issues and keep your skin in good condition.

  • The specialist will diagnose your skin disorders, if there are any, and alert you of changes in moles or suspicious spots if noticed, that could be a sign of a more serious skin problem and require the attention of a medical professional.

Treating A Variety Of Skin Issues.

  • After being diagnosed with a skin condition, getting a regular facial treatment will help treat it and heal your skin. Issues like blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, sunspots and sun damage, acne, inflammation and redness, rosacea, dehydration, wrinkles, acne scarring, loss of firmness and elasticity can be minimized or completely treated with the right facial treatment.

Helpful Do's and Don'ts for Skin Care

We’ve all experienced it. A dreaded time in our lives where our skin wasn’t the most flattering. Unless you’re one of those select individuals who were blessed with beautiful skin from birth and if that’s the case then forget you! What exactly is it that causes our skin to go from healthy to monstrous in only a short period of time?

Here are some helpful skin care do’s and don’ts to abide by to help keep your skin looking healthy and flawless day in and day out!

  • Drink Plenty of Water – Water is essential for a healthy complexion. H2O flushes out the toxins in your body and keeps the rest of your insides on track and working properly. Your skin is the very last organ to receive nutrients and nourishment from water. Meaning that in stressful situations and during these summer months especially, you have to drink even more water than you normally would! How much water should you be drinking? Take your body weight and divide it in half- that is how many ounces of water you should be taking in daily.
  • Moisturize – Moisturizer is one of the most important beauty products out there. Whether it be for the face or for the body, keeping your skin moisturized will combat multiple skin concerns down the road. Using an overnight moisturizer is a great way to stay consistently hydrated. Skin cell regeneration works faster overnight so using a nighttime moisturizer before bed is sure to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.
Exfoliate – Weekly exfoliation is a must to remove old dead skin cells and to make room for new cell regeneration. Using an exfoliation scrub gently once or twice a week can help to keep your skin glowing. Be cautious with exfoliation though, too much can make your skin over sensitive and irritated quickly! Try using a Clarisonic a few days a week to ease into exfoliation if your skin gets sensitive easily.

  • Get a Facial – Instead of trying a DIY facial treatment let the experts give you the advice and treatment. Make sure you do your research before selecting a spa for your facial. Allowing someone to work on your skin can be a frightening thought but if you find a well recommended spa you should be fear free. If this is your first time doing a treatment start with a basic facial and let the esthetician recommend where you should go with your next one – maybe aiming more towards anti-aging or acne fighting masks and treatments in your next visit.
  • Eat Healthy – Just as our mothers told us growing up “You need to eat your veggies!” – If you’re anything like me and can’t sit down and eat a plain and dry salad try an alternative like juicing. Natural juices are full of vitamins, anti-oxidants and nutrients that help increase blood flow as well as total cell turnover and regeneration making for the healthiest complexion!
Use SPF Protection – SPF should be worn daily on all skin types – even in the winter! SPF will fight the damaging effects of UVA and UVB rays on your skin. You can mix an SPF with your daily moisturizer or find a moisturizer with SPF already in it. My all time favorite SPF is by SkinCeuticals and is the Physical Fusion UV Defense FPS 50. I mix the SPF with my daily moisturizer to ensure I have really good coverage and protection from the sun.

These are the DON'TS are:

  • Don’t Over Do It – Don’t go overboard with your skin care routine. Keeping it as simple as possible will ensure a healthy complexion. Testing out too many serums and constantly changing your skin care routine will irritate your skin. Find one routine that works best for your skin type and stick to that for as long as possible! This will help to keep your skin balanced and happy. You really only need to wash your face once a day – washing twice a day can also be over doing it.

  •  Don’t Always Trust Pinterest – Although Pinterest is one of my very favorite addictions and I do find some really good DIY ideas – it isn’t the most ideal place to find skin care advice. I will admit I have tried some really awesome masks but it is important to be aware of which at-home ingredients are helpful and which could be harmful. Proceed with caution when you see vinegar, spices, hydrogen peroxide, egg whites and or citrus in the recipes.
  • Don’t Drink Too Much Coffee – My one vise is my worst enemy. One cup of coffee a day can be beneficial but too many Starbucks trips in one week (or one day for some of us) can be dehydrating on the skin. Our skin needs all the water and hydration it can get, especially in the heat of summer so try to limit your coffee intake as much as physically possible for your lifestyle.

  • Don’t Over Exfoliate – Doing a once or twice a week exfoliation to remove dead skin cells is a great way to keep your skin healthy. Over doing this can give you reverse effects. Avoid using harsh scrubs that will make the skin irritated and vulnerable. If you have oily skin you can handle more exfoliation per week but if you tend to have dry/normal skin stick to once or twice a week max!

  • Don’t Touch Your Face – This is easier said than done especially if you have a blemish that you can’t help but pester. The more that you touch your face the more problems that will arise. When you touch your face with unclean hands you are pulling bacteria from your dirty hands to your face and causing more fuel for the blemishes. Keep your hands off your face at all costs and do not pick or pop any blemishes! Again with the easier said than done but doing so will result in scaring- leaving you with bigger problems than a measly ol’ pimple.

What is Hispanic Skin care?

There is a stereotype of the Hispanic skin type as olive to dark brown, smooth, and maybe just a little oily. Like many stereotypes, this idea of what “Hispanic” skin should be has a connection to truth.

Hispanic skin care, like the skin care for any “race” of people is not a one size fits all proposition. There is no “latina skin type”. Latina skin varies widely and your needs will be unique. Like African Americans, Latinas skin color and type varies.

There's a reason so many brands are marketing products specifically to Latinas. Our skin is more prone to certain issues and need customized routines to keep it looking its best.

Here are some facts about the skin of Latinas:

The Problem: They are more prone to acne.Because our skin is more likely to be oily, we're prone to acne and blemishes. The worst part about this is that it can last well past our teenage years.

In many Hispanics, two factors make hyperpigmentation worse. Especially in Mexico and the United States, many people of Hispanic heritage develop type 2 diabetes at a relatively young age, sometimes even as children. People who have type 2 diabetes tend to get darker and more widespread brown spots as acne heals.

Sunblocks are also a problem for Hispanics because of their effects on the body’s ability to make vitamin D. The darker the skin, the more sunlight it needs to make this essential vitamin that protects the body against, among other health problems, skin cancer. Many experts believe that one of the most important reasons skin cancer is on the rise throughout Central and South America is that more and more people are following doctor recommendations to use sunblock, which leads to vitamin D deficiency and increased vulnerability to skin cancer that is not triggered by exposure to sunlight, such as the deadly form of skin cancer known as melanoma.

Other dermatologists have noticed that more than any other ethnic group, Hispanics tend to get cystic acne. Many Hispanics who escape teenage acne develop cystic acne in their early 20’s, and the condition is very hard to treat without causing the inflammation that can permanently discolor the skin. In cystic acne, healthy but pink skin grows over pockets of bacterial infection that cause constant irritation to the skin but cannot be drained because the pore no longer exists.

Broken Capillaries

What are Broken Capillaries?  Broken capillaries are tiny veins that can appear through the skin on your face, legs and chest. Although these spidery, reddish blemishes don’t pose a serious health risk.

Broken capillaries, commonly known as spider veins, or by medical terminology telangiectasia, are tiny blood vessels that we see on the surface of the skin,” says Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Schwartz. “Most of these blood vessels are capillaries which connect arteries and veins. Aside from the face, broken capillaries are also commonly found on the legs, especially at the ankles and knees.”

Key causes of broken capillaries
Broken blood vessels can be due to a number of different causes, the most common being damage to the skin from irritation, inflammation, and repeated exposure to the sun. While some causes are preventable, others are beyond control.
Here a couple of possible causes for these marks to start appearing:
Pregnancy: During this stage women commonly have a lot more blood flowing throughout the body which may lead to enlargement of the capillaries which ultimately leads to broken vessels or spider veins typically situated in the abdomen area.
Leg Injuries: Broke Capillaries are apparent for people who suffer from elevated or reduced blood flow caused by leg injuries. People who spend a long time standing up and then followed by pronged sitting down or lying down are more susceptible.
Hormones: Women passing through menopause stage, pregnant women and children going through puberty may develop spider veins as their bodies try to adjust to changes in hormone levels.
Skin Damage: The skin region surrounding the face is more likely to suffer damages than other parts of the body, which is why it’s more common to find broken capillaries on the face. Spider veins may form due to facial skin damage caused by wind, changes in temperature and even glasses pressing on certain areas of the face.
Age: As we age, there are changes in the collagen of both the skin and the small capillaries, which may cause them to weaken and become more visible.
Effective Treatments for Broken Capillaries:
Laser Treatment: Lasers produce intense beams of light that are different colors and wavelengths that vary in their intensity and pulse duration. When undergoing treatment, a handpiece is held near your skin where it transmits the laser frequency.

Sclerotherapy: This treatment, used since the 1930s, entails a salt solution being injected into the affected veins, which subsequently cause them to collapse and stick together, clearing them from the legs

How can you prevent broken capillaries?“Wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun and to limit spider veins on the face,” says Dr. Mardirossian. “Exercise regularly to improve your leg strength, circulation, and vein strength. Focus on exercises that work your legs, such as walking or running. Control your weight to avoid placing too much pressure on your legs. And alternate the pressure on your legs when standing up for a long time.”

The effects of makeup and facial treatments on broken capillaries: “Overly drying face washes or washes and wipes with harsh ingredients can irritate the skin, damage the epidermis and cause facial redness and swelling that may encourage new vessel growth,” “Grainy, exfoliating face scrubs can damage sensitive face skin, leaving it to heal and create new vessels. Picking and squeezing pimples and pores can break vessels and cause redness, too.”
This is a careful reminder that in the face area, it’s important to use gentle treatments that do not cause excessive trauma to the delicate skin. Using makeup on the other hand is perfectly fine. “I have never seen makeup cause spider veins,” In fact makeup has not been proven to cause spider veins, it can be used for temporary conceal them.
